Concrete Cube Testing Without Rushed Samples

A cube test only answers the question you prepared for. If the sample was taken from the wrong load, cured unevenly, or labelled with a faded marker, the number on the certificate becomes theatre.

Fill moulds in layers, compact thoroughly, and strike off level. Record the mix reference, time, and weather on the ticket immediately — memory is not a quality system.

Curing tanks need temperature checks as routine as the crushing machine itself. In our teaching laboratory we ask learners to log tank readings before they start demoulding; it builds the habit of treating the environment as part of the test.

When results come back low, resist the urge to blame the lab first. Ask whether the site sample matched the pour, whether cubes were transported upright, and whether the age at test matches the specification.
